What are common venue rules?

Concert venue rules vary slightly by location and promoter, but most venues across the U.S.—especially in the Midwest—follow a consistent set of common rules to ensure safety, enjoyment, and smooth operation. Here's a comprehensive breakdown:

🎟️ Entry & Ticketing

  • Valid Ticket Required: Everyone must present a valid ticket (physical or digital) to enter.

  • Re-entry Restrictions: Most venues have a no re-entry policy—once you're in, you're in.

  • ID for 18+/21+ Shows: Government-issued photo ID is often required for age-restricted events.

🎒 Bag & Item Policies

  • Clear Bag Policy: Many venues only allow clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags (often 12"x6"x12" max).

  • Prohibited Bags: Backpacks, large purses, or bags over a certain size are typically banned.

  • Bag Searches: All bags are subject to inspection upon entry.

🚫 Prohibited Items

Commonly banned items include:

  • Weapons of any kind (including pocket knives)

  • Outside food or drink (except sealed water bottles or medical needs)

  • Professional cameras (those with detachable lenses), video/audio recording devices

  • Laser pointers, fireworks, or glow sticks

  • Umbrellas (at indoor venues)

  • Illegal substances

  • Signs or flags on poles

🪩 Behavior Expectations

  • No moshing or crowd-surfing (strictly enforced at some venues)

  • No smoking or vaping indoors (except in designated areas)

  • No disruptive behavior—you may be ejected without a refund for aggression, intoxication, or harassment

  • Be respectful to staff, performers, and fellow attendees

📷 Photography & Recording

  • No professional equipment unless approved

  • No flash photography

  • Many artists request a strict no-photo policy during the performance

🍻 Alcohol & Refreshments

  • 21+ to purchase alcohol with valid ID

  • Limitations on drink purchases per person (2 at a time is common)

  • Food and drinks usually sold inside—but not allowed to be brought in from outside

🪑 Seating & Accessibility

  • General Admission (GA) shows: first come, first served—arrive early for a good spot

  • Reserved seating shows: only sit in your assigned seat

  • ADA accommodations available—request in advance or at the venue box office

🕰 Arrival & Exit

  • Doors typically open 60–90 minutes before showtime

  • Early arrival recommended for GA shows or parking access

  • Venue staff will assist with crowd exit after performances—especially in amphitheaters or arenas

🛑 COVID/Emergency Updates (when applicable)

  • Some venues may require proof of vaccination or negative test (though less common now)

  • Emergency procedures (evacuation, severe weather, etc.) are managed by staff and clearly posted
